The Literary Arts Connection of Texas, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, in collaboration with The Dock Bookshop will host the AllStar Author Showcase, Saturday, February 13, 2010 at The Black Academy of Arts & Letters located at the corner of Canton and Akard streets in downtown Dallas, TX.
The mission of the AllStar Author Showcase (AAS) is to promote literacy and literary arts through the motivational power of sports to ultimately inspire, inform, entertain and empower individuals, families and communities. The event will include local, regional and national authors from various genres; special appearances, guest speakers, live entertainment, book signings, a business expo, a kid-book-zone, food and more on Saturday, February 13, 2010. (AAS is a premier and FREE daytime event.)
Event highlights include: Pre-show cost activities - Spoken Word Unbounded featuring EMMY, Tony, Peabody, award winning HBO Def poet, Georgia Me with various artists, Thursday, February 11, 2010 at The Dock Bookshop; and Pajama Party hosted by New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and an Essence best-selling author, Mary B. Also there will be a special tribute to and book signing by Mr. Earl Lloyd, who in 1950 became the first African-American to play in an NBA game with the Washington Capitols, was instrumental in integrating professional basketball as a player and coach. Nicknamed "Moonfixer" in college, Lloyd led West Virginia State to two CIAA Conference and Tournament Championships in 1948 and 1949. He was named All-Conference three times (1948-50) and All-American twice as named by the Pittsburgh Courier (1949-50). In 1947-48, West Virginia State was the only undefeated team in the United States. As a player, Lloyd enjoyed a solid NBA career with the Washington Capitols, Syracuse Nationals and Detroit Pistons. During Syracuse's championship season in 1955, he became the first African-American to win an NBA title. In 1968, Lloyd became the first African-American Assistant Coach with the Detroit Pistons. In 1971, he became the second African-American head coach and first African-American bench coach again with Detroit.
Eric Snow, a 14 year NBA veteran and current analyst on Turner Sports’ NBATV, will kick off the release of his new book LEADING HIGH PERFORMERS: The Ultimate Guide to Being a Fast, Fluid and Flexible Leader where he reveals the keys to leading all-stars in any situation. Snow led 3 teams to the NBA finals and now helps corporations and communities reach the championship level.
Participating NBA Wives include: Audrey Griffin, a writer and lifestyle parenting blogger of the popular site “Removing the cape” where she addresses issues concerning child rearing, marriage, parenting, sex and contemporary parenting as it relates to pop culture. Audrey holds a Masters of Arts in Education and is the former Vice President of Behind the Bench: the National Basketball Wives Association; and Jackie Christie who is a model, actress, fashion designer, author and mother of three. She heads the successful record label, Jean Rah Fya records, home to some of the hottest new talent in the business.
