Business opportunities abound in the populous and rapidly developing nation of Vietnam. There is, however, a great deal of naivety among entrepreneurs and companies venturing into the market. Corruption, pollution, lack of infrastructure, an immature work force and cultural barriers are some of the macroeconomic encumbrances they have to overcome.

Vietnam Business Guide: Getting Started in Tomorrow’s Market Today (ISBN: 978-0-470-82452-8; John Wiley & Sons (Asia) Pte Ltd) provides an objective evaluation of the business environment and offers a wealth of information about the unique aspects of the country’s business culture; registration, legal and tax issues; working with local business partners; living conditions in Vietnam and industry-specific opportunities.

Based on the authors’ personal entrepreneurial journey in Vietnam as well as first-hand interviews with seasoned businesspeople working and living there, the book brings the issues to life – better preparing newcomers for what they will encounter, as well as forewarning them of the common pitfalls that business people wander into. Aptly separated into three sections, “Considering Vietnam,” “Starting Up in Vietnam,” and “The Daily Challenges,” this guide offers all the important details for businessmen at every stage of their business ventures in the country.

Getting an insiders’ perspective through Vietnam Business Guide will be one’s best bet in ensuring success within this intricate business environment. It is a must-read for all companies and individuals taking their first steps into the Vietnamese market.

Authors Brian and Kimberly Vierra remark, “Simply applying the strategies that have worked for a company elsewhere in Asia could prove fatal in Vietnam. The culture and history of the country have sculpted a workforce and workplace unlike anything else seen in Asia.”

About the Authors
Brian Vierra graduated from Whitman College with a B.A. degree in Economics and went on to complete a Master’s degree in International Management at Portland State University. Prior to founding two successful businesses in Vietnam, he was the import manager for the New York branch of a global logistics firm. Before this, he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania, East Africa, working as a university economics instructor. Brian is currently the director of Embers Asia Ltd, and the managing director of Phat Tire Ventures. Both companies have operated successfully in Vietnam for more than seven years.

Kimberly Vierra graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (honors) from Lewis and Clark College, and a Master’s degree in International Management from Portland State University. Kimberly has been a Senior Consultant with ORC Worldwide’s Singapore office since March 2007, after relocating from Dalat, Vietnam where she was the co-founder of Embers Asia. Previously, she was a consultant in ORC’s New York headquarters where she consulted with Fortune 500 companies on their international assignments programs. Prior to ORC, Kimberly worked in the International Human Resources department at Nike, Inc.’s world headquarters.
