Martha Stewart is hosting a pie contest for the holiday season, inviting bakers to participate on the show by bringing their best pie where pastry and foodie judges choose a winner. The winner of the event will bake the winning pie with Martha Stewart on a later show.
Lisa Pederson connected with Martha Stewart at a Costco book singing in Carlsbad, CA. Lisa said, “when I came across the ad on Martha’s visit I knew I had to meet her and pitch some ideas for participating with Bake for Hope in 2010.” Pederson, her sister and her daughter suited up in Bake for Hope aprons and waited in line for 2 hours with pitch materials in hand. Pederson said when she arrived at the table.” Martha looked elegant and relaxed. Stewart said, ‘oh Bake for Hope’ and Pederson asked if she could hand Martha the Bake for Hope materials and Stewart replied ‘of course’. Pederson said she was very excited when Martha’s staff took the materials and placed them in the purse under the table. About 10 days later she received a call from the Martha Stewart show asking for her participation. Pederson said, “I nearly leaped out of my skirt when I was asked to participate. Bake for Hope is an annual event hosting bake sales across the country for a week in May leading up to Mothers Day. The proceeds are donated to local Susan G. Komen affiliate offices nationwide. “I wanted an event that would enable anyone from kids to seniors, individuals to businesses to participate, and this was it.” Lisa Pederson says. In 2009 she organized 70 says in over 21 cities nationwide, raising around $27,000 dollars.
Pederson said. “I wanted to make sure that the most money possible was donated, so I had to get thrifty in how any money was used.” Pederson created an all volunteer event, including herself. To manage the event Pederson used a free Microsoft office live website to share event information, Meetup.com for memberships and communication and other online resources to enlist volunteers.
Events were held by individuals, schools, networking groups and businesses in locations such as the ING Café and Hollywood Farmers Market in Los Angeles, YMCA in San Francisco, Gainey Village Spa in Phoenix, SAIC offices in Virginia and more. Bakeries and restaurants participated by donating a percentages of sales for a day or the week and businesses matched bake sale earnings.
