For the second year in a row, JW Construction, Inc. has walked away with the title of Contractor of the Year for remodeling historic structures, this time for the gut renovation and sensitive addition of a 1906 Georgian Revival in Westwood, MA.
The homeowners saw the structure’s potential in its distinctive original details, from the antique brick exterior to the ornate moldings and millwork, but its proud façade had turned shabby through years of deferred maintenance, and its mechanicals and finishes were relics of a bygone era. Recognizing that the renovation and restoration of this project required a skilled and delicate hand, they turned to JW Construction to modernize its systems, refresh its dated material palette, and add a sizeable attached in-law suite that would harmonize with the original structure while providing the separate togetherness the family craved.
JW Construction’s approach was to update the house in phases, starting first with the main residence, so that the owners could occupy it comfortably while the in-law suite was under construction. The scope of the renovation included updating the kitchen and bathrooms, creating a sumptuous master suite, as well as restoring all of the millwork. For the 5,000-square-foot in-law addition, the challenge was to respect the scale and detailing of the original house while still supporting the numerous program elements the client desired, which include a full kitchen, multiple living areas, and an upstairs suite with gracious bathroom and dressing room. This was accomplished by sitting the addition to the rear of the original house, so as not to overwhelm its symmetrical and relatively modest street side elevation, and by sourcing brick to match the original envelope and then whitewashing it to suggest an aged patina. The result is a near invisible connection between the original house and the new structure, creating the illusion that it was there all along.
It is the level of craft and attention to detail that JW Construction brings to each historic residential remodeling project that caught the eye of NARI of eastern Massachusetts awards jury. “I feel honored that our team has been recognized a second time in this category. We pride ourselves on this particular type of work and, it's special when the industry recognizes the hard work and attention to detail our team applies to these projects," notes founder Jon Wardwell.
