On Friday, November 6 in Fulton Recital Hall, 1010 E. 59th Street, Goodspeed Hall, 4th floor at 3:30 pm, the Visiting Committee Colloquium Series welcomes University of Chicago Department of Music post-doctoral fellow Paul Steinbeck for a lecture entitled “Alternative Models for Solo and Collective Improvisation.” The music theorist who specializes in the study of improvisation will bring insight into his study of the relationships between improvisatory practice and social/philosophical visions in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) to show how AACM visions of individual creativity and collaborative performance underlie diverse approaches to improvisation. Admission is free.

Wrapping up the weekend exposé, the New Music Ensemble performs Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat, Crumb’s Five Pieces for Piano, Shawn Allison’s Improvisation, Carter’s Elegy for Viola and Piano, and other not-yet-announced works on Saturday, November 7 at 8:00 PM in the Fulton Recital Hall. Be among the first to experience new creative works at this free concert event.

Published author and pianist, Dr. Chung-Ha Kim, leaves her post at Western Illinois University on Thursday, November 19 to perform works by Mozart, Griffes, Chopin, and Liebermann for the Noontime Concert Series at 12:15 PM. Dr. Kim holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati, with Piano Performance as her main, and Piano Pedagogy as her cognate area. She will also host a Master Class at 4:00 PM with University of Chicago piano program students. Both events take place in Fulton Recital Hall and are free to the public.

Two free concerts are sure to delight beginning with the University Chamber Orchestra on Saturday, November 21 at 8:00 PM performing Schubert’s Second Symphony in B-flat Major, D.125, and Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622. Program includes Seitz’s March Grandioso, Holsinger’s Prelude and Rondo, Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in G minor, Benson’s The Leaves are Falling, and Hanson’s Chorale and Alleluia on Sunday, November 22 at 4:00 PM.
