The need for increased interoperability among navies will promote the uptake of advanced naval command C2 technology in Europe.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (aerospace.frost.com), European Naval Command and Control (C2) Market Assessment, estimates the market grew from $8.0 million in 2008 to $26.0 million by 2015, reaching peak revenues of $52.0 million.

“The European naval C2 market offers tremendous growth potential due to advances in C2 technology,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Harish Balasubramanian. The need to ensure interoperability with NATO is also supporting market prospects.

Due to the high costs of building new vessels and relatively high upgrade costs, many countries will choose to procure ships decommissioned from other navies. This could be a possible solution for most central and eastern European countries to secure the operability of their fleet.

“However, it is still not an ideal way of solving the problem,” states Balasubramanian. “If countries think of acquiring a naval fleet, the industry would need to analyse the tasks it would need to fulfill for the future of military forces in Europe.”

Currently, perceptions related to the role of navies vary across European countries. This will constitute the main challenges for the C2 industry in Europe.

“Current threats are perceived differently across Europe and hence, the role of naval forces,” explains Balasubramanian. “This, in turn, leads to uncertainty in knowing customer expectations. A stronger cooperation between market participants and end users could be a solution to this challenge.”

Entering markets in CEE countries necessitates awareness of local regulations and specific requirements. Thus, entering partnerships with local companies and entering the market together will be the best strategy to effect market entry in this region.
