Whether looking for new jobs, growing their businesses or gaining higher visibility, people over 50 should develop intentional personal brands. The conference attracts some 10,000 people annually. This year, AARP expects approximately 4,000 to attend the career fair featuring a variety of career transition professionals. Marva Goldsmith will lead several personal branding sessions during the three-day AARP event, held October 22-24 in Las Vegas.
"If you were a product, how would you market yourself?" is the key question Marva Goldsmith addresses in her book Branding Yourself After Age 50: Creating Brand Strategy For Your Life. Seminar participants will receive the book that discusses practical issues, such as:
• Analysis of their own strengths, weaknesses opportunities and threats;
• Steps to create a personal brand strategy;
• How to build your personal brand online;
• Dressing tips for interviews.
Marva will help participants think differently about marketing themselves. She explains, “Chicken is a product, KFC is a brand.” So, what’s the point? “Chicken is sold; KFC is sought, selected and purchased. We achieve the same effect if we develop personal brands.” Many job seekers enter the marketplace as an indistinguishable product, barely recognizable from the others competing for the same job. Consumers of the KFC, Chick-fil-A or Popeye’s brands seek them out because of the expectation of what the brand delivers. They pay a premium for the brand over the indistinguishable product. According to Goldsmith, a brand distinguishes you from the competition, highlights your strengths and leads to a purchase…in this case a job, a contract or a promotion.
Marva speaks with authority about career reinvention. At age 41, she left a fast-track executive career in the utility industry to become a certified image professional, brand coach and professional speaker. She has grown her own successful image and brand management firm and has published several books. She is a gifted speaker and inspired teacher, and works to help others reach their personal and professional potentials.
Marva also conducts a Branding Over 50 webinar. The next webinar series starts on November 3, 2009 at 8:00 pm EST.
