This is where the GO240-8 Daimler PowerShift transmission and the VR 115 E Voith Retarder complement each other in an exemplary manner. As a combination, the Retarder-transmission system offers passengers and drivers a safe, pleasant and comfortable traveling experience. It allows easy gear-shifting, is quiet and, thanks to its low weight, enables maximum payloads. The Voith Retarder adds ultimate comfort through smooth and jolt-free braking and is part of the standard equipment of all Travegos as a wear-free endurance brake. It is also a feature of the Telligent adaptive cruise control and is offered through the Mercedes-Benz “Safety Package“ together with the Active Brake Assist, the Telligent stability control system and the driver airbag.

Safety and Economy that Pay for Themselves

After prolonged use, the service brakes can reach temperatures of up to 1 000° C. As a result, their braking capacity drops rapidly, cracks can appear and brake pads wear out. Voith Retarders are wear-free endurance brakes, which keep the temperature of the service brake at a low level. The service brake thus remains fully functional and offers an additional safety reserve for emergencies. The Retarder not only offers itself as a endurance braking system on long and challenging serpentine routes, it is also excellently suited for adaptive braking in touring and long-distance traffic, as well as in urban start and stop operation.

Economical driving and growing environmental awareness are increasingly important also in the bus and coach sector and call for maximum quality and reliability of all products.

Function and Design:

The technology of the Voith Retarder is based on the hydrodynamic principle. Two bladed wheels, a rotor and a stator, face each other. The space between their chambers is filled with oil. The rotor is connected to the propshaft of the vehicle, while the stator is rigidly fixed to the housing of the retarder. The rotor, which is driven via the propshaft, accelerates the oil, which is then decelerated in the stator. As a result, the rotor is also decelerated and the vehicle is consequently braked. Braking heat that is generated during this process is dissipated via the vehicle cooling system.

Operation of the Retarder:

The Retarder is electronically activated via a separate Retarder switch or via the brake pedal. The Retarder electronics are CAN bus-compliant and communicate with the vehicle management. Some commercial vehicles also have a so-called Retarder blending system, i. e. the retarder is fully integrated into the brake management of the vehicle, so that the ideal braking output for the vehicle can be identified through on-board vehicle computers. This output can be generated by the braking power of the Retarder, the engine brake or other vehicle-specific braking systems, as well as the conventional service brake.

Voith Turbo, the specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications, as well as for ship propulsion systems, is a Group Division of Voith AG.

Voith is setting the standard in the paper, energy, mobility, and service markets.
