Most people have seen it during live transmissions of Formula 1 races: important engine and transmission data are telemetrically transmitted online from the vehicle straight to the box. The pit crew is thus continuously informed about the condition of these components. This is now also possible with the Voith DIWA transmission. With DIWA SmartNet, Voith offers the opportunity to permanently monitor the driveline ? with optional online access to the transmission control and automatic generation of a SMS in the event of a failure.
Within the driveline of a vehicle, the transmission takes up a central position and thus creates an important interface from which essential data can be recorded easily and in most cases without any additional sensors. In citybuses, this facility is today increasingly utilized via the operating data recording systems of modern automatic transmissions. This data not only sheds light on the transmission itself, but also on the driveline as a whole, as well as the daily operation of the vehicle. In the process, the operating data is supplemented by classic failure or event recorders and/or software functions aimed at early failure detection including, for example, oil aging.
In order to use these data efficiently in daily operation, it should be possible to access them easily, fast and instantly. At the moment, they are usually read out via a direct connection of the diagnostic device with the transmission control ? in the evening, when the vehicle has returned to the depot. In view of longer and longer daily operating hours and widely scattered depots this is a time consuming and cost intensive exercise. Transmitting these data regularly via GSM/GPRS and storing them centrally on a web server is therefore an innovative and highly effective alternative.
DIWA SmartNet integrates this form of data transmission with the evaluation and visualization of essential information under a user friendly surface. Via internet access, operators gain a direct view of the major operating parameters of the vehicle, such as average speeds or current mileages, as well as general information about the condition of the transmission on the basis of the classic traffic light scheme ? green ? amber ? red ? depending on the urgency of the possibly required measures.
For a more detailed investigation of failure causes, mechanics can dial into the transmission control via mobile radio and monitor the transmission during its daily operation from any place in the world. If a fault occurs really sudden and without warning, the mechanic even receives a SMS from the transmission control to his cell phone ? if required with details about the position of the vehicle, identified via GPS.

As a result of operating times of more than 18 hours per day, high mileages, difficult climatic conditions and the customer?s request for maximum vehicle availability, classic maintenance and service strategies quickly reach their limits.
