Banjo virtuoso Alison Brown and the Alison Brown Quartet kick off the 2009-2010 Club MAC series with performances at 8 pm. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17, in Theatre 2 at the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.
The group performs with special guest Joe Craven. Described as a musical madman, Craven’s stage set-up more closely resembles a yard sale as he turns anything from a clay pot to a thermos into musical instruments. The accomplished fiddler, educator and storyteller stretches the boundaries of conventional music theories.
Brown has released 10 albums and was named International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year in 1991. Lauded for her blues-jazz, pop-grass sound, the Grammy nominee is co-founder of Compass Records and has played with various artists, including Alison Krauss, Stuart Duncan, Vince Gill and Michelle Shocked.
The intimate, cabaret series offers patrons an opportunity to get closer to the action, in a setting with limited division between the audience and stage. With a choice between traditional theater seats and cabaret tables, concert goers can enjoy wine and other refreshments while taking in the sounds of some of the world’s most talented performers.
Tickets to the Oct. 16 and 17 performances are $34 for adults, $32 for seniors and $24 for College of DuPage students and youth. Cabaret table seating is $40 for adults, $38 for seniors and $40 for C.O.D. students and youth.

Located 25 miles west of Chicago near I-88 and I-355, the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage (atthemac.org) is a state-of-the-art facility, housing three performance spaces, an art gallery and classrooms for the college’s academic programming. This unique facility has presented theater, music, dance and visual art to more than 1.5 million people since its opening in 1986 and last year welcomed more than 75,000 patrons from the greater Chicago area to more than 230 performances.
The center offers free parking and group discounts and is home to Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, the New Philharmonic Orchestra and DuPage Opera Theatre. The result is a collection of touring and resident and student groups that foster enlightened education and performance opportunities to encourage artistic expression, promote a lasting relationship between people and art, and enrich the cultural vitality of the community.
The MAC’s extensive community outreach program includes pre-performance lectures, classes with visiting artists and the SchoolStage program, which provides students with an interactive, educational arts experience. Those and other efforts to increase community access to arts earned the MAC the Illinois Arts Council’s Partners in Excellence designation, which recognizes 40 of the most significant cultural institutions in the state.
