This exhibition is the first to explore the world of the maharajas and their extraordinarily rich culture. There will be over 250 magnificent objects on display, many of them on loan to the UK for the first time from India's royal collections.
The exhibition will cover the period from when the great era of the Maharajas began in the 18th century, to the end of British rule in 1947. It will examine the changing role of the Maharajas in an historical and social context, and how their patronage of the arts resulted in splendid and beautiful commissions.
Amongst the many stunning pieces that will be on display during the exhibition are three thrones, a silver gilt howdah, gem-encrusted weapons, court paintings, photographs, a Rolls Royce, Indian turban jewels, and jewellery commissioned by Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels in the 20th century.
The V&A Shops are pleased to support the exhibition with a collection of over 200 new products, each one inspired by the spectacular treasures on show. These new products include;
1. Turban Jewel Brooch: £25
2. Paisley Umbrella: £25
3. Deco Head Band: £35
4. Limited Edition Draped Jewels Purse: £40
5. V&A 2010 Diaries - Pocket Diary: £6.99, Desk Diary: £12.99
