In a time when all the headlines are negative when it comes to news about the recession, housing starts, foreclosures and the like, it is hard to believe that there are businesses that rely on construction related income that can survive these times. And many do not. But one business, AVACO Construction, based in Moreno Valley, has done just that. AVACO Construction is celebrating its 9th year in the business of home construction, remodeling, and home additions. While the challenges of this national economic downturn have impacted the number of jobs they usually do, AVACO Construction has proven that with a solid company foundation and a reputation for being one of the best around, it is possible to survive even in the housing arena, probably the toughest area in our current financial crisis.
As it celebrates its 9 years in business, AVACO Construction, like so many others in the residential construction field, recognizes that this is an extraordinary time in our country. As with everything in life, there have been highs and lows for the business. But by all measures this past year has been like no other.
“We are proud to have been in this business for as long as we have,” said Dan Avalos, the President of the company. “But we also know that not every home builder or home remodeling company has been as fortunate as us. We have watched a few others fail, especially in the last year, but we just keep doing what we do, which is to focus on quality service and doing a job as professionally and as best as it can be done for the money.”
The focus on quality over quantity seems to have been one of the key factors to the company’s success. Economics dictate that there simply will not be as many home building or home addition projects as there used to be doing the seemingly long ago days of the housing boom. AVACO Construction, which while being in existence as a company for nine years, has over eighteen years of experience thanks to veteran leadership and staff, and it has always operated on the philosophy that quality work.
is more important than large numbers of jobs. So its success was also determined more by a job done well than by doing more jobs. So in that sense the economic downturn and the evaporation of so many residential construction projects, while obviously impacting the business, was not the end, as it was for some others.
“I wouldn’t be telling the truth if I said we haven’t seen a slow down in our business,” said Avalos. “But what it has done is forced us to remember that we care more about the right job than we do about doing just any project. So in that sense we are just more focused. Doing work that we are proud of, and that our clients are happy with, is what keeps us in business and what gets people coming to us. I just feel that if we focus on doing quality, beautiful work, then everything will take care of itself.”
AVACO Construction (avacoconstruction.com) is a family owned business, another factor that seems to play a part in their success. Dan Avalos runs the business with his wife, Carla, his father, daughter and a close family friend. The beauty of being family owned and operated is that it helps them keep family in the forefront of their work, which makes a difference when you’re working in and on the homes of other people and their families. It is added motivation in getting a job done well.
The residential construction, remodeling and home improvement industries are definitely suffering through some of the leanest years they have experienced. But that doesn’t mean homes aren’t being built and that additions aren’t being ordered. It simply means that the competition for those jobs is simply going to be fiercer. But like in everything else, it also means that the cream will rise. AVACO Construction is clearly part of that rising bunch.
Avalos said it best. “All we can do is continue to do what we’ve been doing all these years, offering homeowners the very best service and construction work around. Whether the economy is up or down is out of our control. What we can control is the quality of our work.
