Award-winning woman winemaker Signe Zoller recently announced the first public Open House and Wine Tasting event at her downtown Paso Robles custom winemaking facility, Zoller Wine Styling (ZWS). The event will coincide with the Paso Robles Harvest Wine Weekend from 10 am – 6 pm at 525-A Pine Street in Paso Robles.
Zoller describes the ZWS facility (which opened for business in 2007) as more of an upscale studio for an exciting “haute couture” style of luxury, made-to-order winemaking. Inspired by custom crush facilities in San Francisco, yet rivaling them in its capacity to style small-lot, single-barrel vintages for private clients, Zoller says the ZWS lab and crush facilities are the ideal environment for crafting premium “designer wine.”
ZWS will be pouring nine privately-commissioned varietals at the open house event—including vintages for Barr Estate, St. Hillaire, Cuatro Días, Twin Coyotes, Helping Hands, Salisbury Vineyard, and Loma Linda—as well as her own line, Gr8Ass (her 2007 Gr8 Ass Cabernet recently earned a 90-point score from Wine Enthusiast and a bronze award at the 2008 LA County Fair).
Zoller, who has a Masters degree in Food Science and Enology from the University of California at Davis, held leading winemaking positions at several high profile wineries before launching her own ZWS venture; these include Cambria Winery, Kendall-Jackson, and a ten-year tenure with founding winemaker Chuck Ortman at Meridian Vineyards, one of the most successful commercial wineries in Paso Robles.
“Signe’s winemaking skills show versatility and an unmatched palate—she is a an extraordinary talent, the likes of which are rarely seen,” says Ortman, pointing to her “smooth and balanced” wines that have won numerous awards including Best of Show at the Long Beach and Monterey wine competitions and two at the California State Fair. Zoller has also professionally judged such prestigious wine competitions as the Orange County Wine Competition and has been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance and the Central Coast Winegrowers Association.
She says she has always loved sharing her winemaking expertise with others (she is the past president of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and the Paso Robles Vintners and Growers Association)—so there is no accomplishment greater, in her estimation, than her latest: ZWS. “I am so proud of our state-of-the-art, bonded winemaking facility; it has opened new avenues for the discerning wine drinker to literally commission their dream wine, and then learn about and participate in all that goes on from grape to bottle—without getting their hands too dirty,” Zoller says. “It is very exciting to have the opportunity now to share our chic workspace and stylized wines with the community-at-large for the first time.”
