The Father of the Indian nation, and the apostle of non-violence. He worked for India’s independence from the British rule. And gave us the awesome power of nonviolence. A social reformer, he taught the world the eternal values of love and truth. His fight for human rights, protection of environment and religious tolerance was mankind’s finest hour.
On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 140th birth anniversary on October 2 the charitable GandhiServe Foundation, Berlin/Germany, has launched a photo gallery on the internet that displays over 1000 photographs of Mahatma Gandhi and India’s freedom struggle. All photographs, many of them very rare, are presented in black and white as well as in sepia colour, and can be downloaded in high resolution instantaneously. Moreover, photo prints and products of each motif can be ordered, such as note cards, mugs, mousepads and jigsaw puzzles.
Along with the photo gallery a video channel has been launched by the foundation that contains over 500 video clips and full-length films about the life and work of the man, of whom Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said: “If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. He lived, thought, and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony. We may ignore him at our own risk.” The videos, over 25 hours in total, include personal film recording of Gandhi’s family and show the Mahatma in all his moods and moments.
GandhiServe’s film and photo archive of Mahatma Gandhi and India’s independence movement ranks as the best of its kind in terms of quality and quantity. The foundation was able to gather the precious material in co-operation with the Gandhi family, associates, archives, museums and leading researchers in India and abroad. GandhiServe (gandhiserve.org) is one of the most active institutions bringing the life of the Mahatma closer to humankind. Apart of various educational and research activities, GandhiServe Foundation also runs a social network, GandhiTopia, which is a meeting point for Gandhian students, scholars, activists and institutions on the internet. It also provides news, views, media and events relating to Mahatma Gandhi, peace and nonviolence.
Gandhi has left an indelible mark on human history. His thought is ever relevant for all those who aspire for a better and fuller life in this war-weary and fear-stricken world.
