GENIVI is a non-profit industry alliance committed to driving the broad adoption of an In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) reference platform using open source. Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Vishnu Muralidharan spoke recently with GENIVI President Graham Smethurst about the company’s unique vision and possible impact on the automotive industry.
GENIVI was created to establish a platform that meets the requirements of a broad base of OEMs and first tier companies in order to capitalize on the volume effect while delivering a solution that does not have a single point dependency in the whole of the solution stack. GENIVI 1 will be launched before the end of this year and will provide the basis for companies like BMW, GM or PSA to initiate their product development.
One of GENIVI’s primary motivations is to help create an environment for connected vehicles because during the time they spend in the car, people now expect to remain connected to their devices as well as the outside world.
In this respect, OEMs have a clear advantage over aftermarket solutions. “When you consider the roles and effectively the advantages of the automaker; OEM solutions are always going to be better integrated than aftermarket.
The business model is based on companies collaborating to establish the base platform and then competing through their commercial implementations,” says Smethurst.
Apart from GENIVI several other initiatives focus on infotainment platform development. At this point there is no clear winner; whether GENIVI enables intelligent design to meet long product cycles and proliferating standards is something that remains to be seen.
