The Truth About Trading Pins!

There is a need to clear up misinformation from people who only want your money, not your satisfaction and repeat business in the competitive trading pin marketplace.

Photo etched pins are more accurate and therefore more trade-able than other styles of lapel pins.

The photo etched pins have a less accurate image on the pin face, due to the acid etching process which leaves a thicker plating outline around each of the colors.
In other words, a die struck style pin will actually have a clearer and more precise surface image than the photo etched method due to die stamping vs. acid etching.
The fact that a computer is utilized to create a photo etched image has no relevance in whether or not the pin is more accurate. As for perceived value, the photo etched pins are 0.80 mm thin vs. the 1.20 mm thick soft enamel and cloisonné style which are stamped from a die. The thicker pins have a higher perceived value and are definitely more trade-able due to the heavier weight and deeper color fills.

Photo etched pins are less expensive than die struck style pins due to the fact that less copper is used to create them, and utilize a computer, not manual labor to create them. The pin face image has thicker plating lines than the Soft Enamel or Cloisonné style trading pins, which makes the Photo Etched pins less accurate, and definitely less tradable. Less expensive? Yes they are. More trade able? No, they are not.

Soft Enamel Cloisonné pins are the same as traditional Cloisonné style pins.

This is an idea created to deceive and misinform the public. Unscrupulous merchants bank on the fact that you will not know the difference between the two. Here is what they do: They produce the pin as a soft enamel style pin, which has a paint fill. To simulate the clear glass finish of the Cloisonne, an epoxy dome is applied to the pin face. Is there a visual difference between the two? Absolutely, think about it….glass fill vs. paint fill. Glass fill is much brighter and smoother. The epoxy dome on the inferior soft enamel pin darkens the colors, yellows and cracks over time, and causes optical distortions along the pin face edge. If you are utilizing transparent or glitter color fills, the effect is amplified, and results in less trade-able pins with less vibrant color fills and a less than dramatic effect. When viewed side by side, there is an obvious difference.

Soft enamel “Cloisonné” is a pin style which exists only in the minds of pin companies that bank on you not knowing the difference between their misrepresentation and the genuine article.

Iron or steel enamel pins are just as good as the copper based pins, and there is no way to tell the difference.

Ridiculous! Why don’t we just say that a Yugo is just as good as a BMW…I mean, they are both cars, right? The iron and steel pins are less expensive for a reason. These metals are cheaper, and much harder than the copper based metal. Their denseness results in a pin plating that is much thicker and less graceful than the copper metal base. They are also porous in nature, which results in “pitting” on the pin face. This pitting is visible as small holes within the color fills. An iron or steel base cannot be electro-statically gold plated either; in fact, the finished pin has a mottled brass finish. Try placing a glitter or transparent fill on these pins and then make sure that you are sitting down when you open the box! The finished result is less than pleasant. Put these together and you will get what you pay for; an inexpensive, less accurate, less appealing trading pin that will not trade well. What fun is that? Other pin companies are offering such inferior products only to make money on unsuspecting customers. It is heartbreaking to see kids walking around at trading competitions with pins that no one wants.

Iron and steel enamel pins are less expensive for a reason. First year teams commonly fall into this trap and regret their decision in purchasing iron/steel enamel pins over their much higher quality copper counterparts.

Iron Soft Enamel Cloisonné

There is no such thing. The merchants banking on customer’s lack of knowledge about pins creates the worst possible variation and gives it an impressive sounding name.

Never, never do business with the company who refers to a pin as “iron soft enamel cloisonné”.

What about the websites that look the same, use the same images, have the same text, the same vague guarantees, and the same prices?

They may use different colors on their sites, but look closely. Do you really think that they are not owned by the same people who house all of the websites and sales people within one building? Try finding out what they really mean by 100% satisfaction guaranteed.
