The UK will spend £468,576,000,000 on their homes in the next six months according to research out today from the UK’s leading home shopping website mydeco.com. The furniture site quizzed people on their 6 month spending plans and found nearly half (41%) of us intend to spend at least £1,000 whilst nearly a fifth (17%) will spend more than £50,000. A further 12% intend to spend £5,000 and 5% will spend £10,000.
The furniture website launched in Feb 2008 by ex lastminute.com founder Brent Hoberman has also revealed the luxury home additions we aspire to own. Forget saunas and swimming pools, the majority of women (46%) really hanker after a huge ‘Sex in the City’ style walk-in wardrobe and dressing room the most, whilst for men the top choice is a state of the art home gym (39%).
It seems we love showing off our homes to others too because when it comes to entertaining, we want to be in control with over three quarters of us (79%)preferring to be the host in our own homes rather than a guest in someone else’s home – the preferred choice of only a fifth (20%).

When asked which of the more functional features we would most like to add to our homes, a bigger garden was the top choice for nearly half of us (46%), followed by more entertaining space (25%) and an additional bedroom (21%). The dining room was confirmed as the least popular edition to any home, scoring the same as a garage with a mere 4% of people opting for them. The room in our home we are most proud of is the living room, followed by the kitchen and the bedroom.

The numbers referred to in this release were arrived at by applying the research findings to the UK adult population figures. Research was based on answers from over 2,000 UK respondents.
