PiMS Workspace, the leading UK provider of tailored accommodation solutions, has today announced that it is the first project management company in the corporate relocation and refurbishment sector to be certified by the British Standards Institution (BSI) as compliant with the international standard, ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems. PiMS Workspace (pimsworkspace.com) was certified for its Environmental Management System and policy, which is designed to help PiMS Workspace to better manage its environmental risks currently and in the future, reduce public liability insurance costs and ensure the proper and legal disposal of waste on behalf of clients.
Explains Martin Atkinson, Managing Director of PiMS Workspace, “Increasingly, businesses are identifying areas for improvement and ways to reduce the environmental impact of doing business. One major area is waste disposal, but this can be a potential minefield.”
Companies should be mindful that when using third party carriers, whenever waste is transferred from one party to another, it must be accompanied by a waste transfer note (WTN). The WTN proves that waste has changed hands and that the disposing business is legally responsible for it. If the waste is dumped or fly-tipped, and the disposer has no WTN, then it is actually their customer who becomes liable to prosecution. Says Atkinson, “We urge business to ensure that any third party they employ to take away their waste is able to prove they are legally responsible.

PiMS Workspace’s environmental policy also includes provision for minimising waste during move and relocation, fit-out and refurbishment projects. The company has also committed to the re-use of materials such as furniture, glass and IT equipment, or recycling wherever possible and to demonstrate its future environmental obligation to stakeholders, customers, prospective employees and partners. Continual improvement of PiMS Workspace’s environmental performance will be achieved via its Environmental Management System and a programme of objectives and targets, including the edification of its full network of contractors and suppliers to encourage them to operate to similar standards.
The International Organisation for Standardisation’s ISO 14000 series of standards concentrates on environmental management, with ISO 14001 considered the corner stone of the series.
