The golf industry has gained a reputation for doing little to reduce its carbon footprint. But Energy Digital magazine, found on EnergyDigital.com, makes a case in favor of the golf industry, which has in fact taken measures to do its part to positively impacting climate change. From the little-known Scottish Golf Environment Group who advises owners on biodiversity, energy conservation, climate change, sustainable drainage and general environmental issues to San Diego’s Barona Creek Golf Club’s efforts to lower its irrigation needs, steps are being taken toward energy efficiency.
“We want to establish a baseline for environmental performance of golf facilities,” says Clark Throssell, Director of Research at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, one of the organizations looking to ensure the golf industry maintains an energy efficient business. “Properly managed golf courses are compatible with the environment and can contribute positively to communities.”
In a promising new development, a number of technologies are emerging that turn ordinary household waste such as the food that gets thrown away into productive energy. One of the latest entrants into the market is known as plasma arc technology. The technology’s process of transforming household waste into electricity and heat is called plasma gasification, which avoids the incineration that takes place using other waste disposal methods. Instead, the process slowly heats the trash to create a clean, low carbon source of energy.
In reference to the growth potential of this emerging market, Paul Bromelow, Global Sales Director of Think London, says, “We are currently assisting a series of overseas waste-to-energy companies with setting up a presence in London. Innovative technologies such as plasma gasification have boosted the potential of the vast waste management market here.”
Rounding out the latest issue of Energy Digital magazine is an exclusive Q&A with Dr. Kris Singh, President and CEO of Holtec International, as well as profiles of energy companies who are all on the leading edge of the industry, including a host of international firms making an impact today.
