nuAlerts.com, a social media communication tool for community leaders and organizations, unveiled a first-of-its-kind Community Newsmakers Program today and announced the success of its Tri-Valley Newsmakers Pilot. Mayors Newell Arnerich of Danville, Tim Sbranti of Dublin, Ron Dellums of Oakland, Jennifer Hosterman of Pleasanton, and H. Abram Wilson of San Ramon along with Kaiser Permanente are among the 25 Tri-Valley Newsmakers now sending real time alerts on important topics that residents can receive via SMS, Facebook, Twitter, Email and Widgets. Community Newsmakers are local leaders committed to building smarter communities with better connected residents by sharing important information in a timely-manner via nuAlerts. Membership is annual, by invitation only, free, and is limited to 10 Newsmakers per city.

The launch of the Community Newsmakers Program comes at a time when there is a growing national push to find new ways for communities to stay connected. According to a July 2009 paper by Harvard Business School Professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter and Stanley S. Litow, “the need for a fresh approach to U.S. communities is more urgent than ever because of the biggest global economic crisis since the Great Depression … calls for leaders to use technology to inform and connect people.”

Residents can now be the first to know about important news, events, promotions, and more by choosing the types of alerts to receive and how they want to receive them, including via SMS/text messaging, email, social sites like Facebook or Twitter, and a real-time streaming dashboard that can be placed on blogs and websites. Residents are able to follow any number of individual Tri-Valley Newsmakers, or subscribe to the shared Tri-Valley Newsmakers Network to receive alerts from all Newsmakers in their local area. Subscribing is free for residents.
Mayor Sbranti alerted Dublin residents that the BART strike had been averted. Mayor Arnerich advised Danville residents to take advantage of their new Traffix bus system on the first day of school. Kaiser Permanente will keep health-conscious locals abreast of the latest on the H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu). And Chris Chandler, President of Livermore Valley Winegrowers, is using nuAlerts for voting at the Harvest Wine Celebration on September 6th and 7th. With the success of its Tri-Valley Newsmakers pilot, nuAlerts is now inviting Mayors nationally to lead the Community Newsmakers Program in their community.
