The business report is conducted monthly, and is an economic indicator for manufacturing, sampling 163 metalforming companies in Canada and the United States.

A modest improvement is seen when it comes to the trend in the general economic activity for metalforming companies. Among the participants, fourteen percent predicted progress in business, while 41 percent says that it will remain unchanged, and 45 percent reported a decrease in activity.

Metalforming companies awaits incoming orders, and this will somewhat improve on over the next three months. In addition, the current average daily shipping levels remains the same since January. Although expectations that business conditions will slightly boost in the next three months, the number of metalforming companies with a slice of their workforce on short time or layoff spiked to 64 percent in January.

According to William Gaskin, president of Precision Metalforming Association, “the metalforming industry relies on orders for components and assemblies by customers in many fields, including automotive, appliance, construction, electronics, defense, agriculture, off highway and other markets, nearly all of which are suffering significant production cutbacks.”
