Universal Wrecking Corp., a premier demolition, scrap metal recycling and wrecking contractor that operates on a nationwide basis, recently completed the last phase of a the demolition of a large manufacturing and warehousing facility in Pennsylvania.

After a major fire severely damaged a large section of this one million square foot facility, Universal Wrecking Corp. (UWC) was awarded the first phase of the project which was to perform emergency demolition services. UWC was contracted to remove the collapsed bays of the building and clean up the fire damaged debris and steel members. This needed to be done in a controlled demolition manner in order to preserve structures and bays that were designated to be salvaged.

Prior to demolition activities, an environmental survey was conducted along with a review of the client’s existing documentation on Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) and other possible hazardous materials. No ACM was found due in part to the age of the building construction. The other environmental concerns were minimal and addressed in a proper manner.

To perform the selective demolition services, UWC mobilized numerous pieces of demolition equipment from its expansive fleet. Heavy equipment mobilized to the site included several Caterpillar excavators with demolition attachments (shears, grapples), skid steers with demolition bucket attachments, several manlifts and a crane. A crew of ten experienced demolition employees including laborers, foremen, site supervisor and site safety officer were also mobilized.

UWC utilized surgical demolition techniques to cut away the damaged sections from sections the Client’s engineer deemed to be structurally sound. This was accomplished utilizing a coordinated effort between manual and machine demolition techniques. Laborers on manlifts with torches first isolated the fire damaged sections from the structurally sound sections by torch cutting away beams and structural members to isolate the areas. Once the areas were separated, excavators with shears and grapples were utilized to carefully remove the section of each bay. The damaged sections and bays of the warehousing facility were systematically demolished in this manner until all fire damaged areas were demolished.

Following this first phase work, the client’s engineer did further structural analysis on the remaining sections and bays of the building. The client determined that it would be more cost effective to demolish the remaining sections of the building and rebuild then try to repair and retrofit to get the facility back up to code.

The client contacted UWC to come back and demolish the remaining 700,000 square feet of standing facility. Demolition was down to top of concrete slab. UWC was able to offset a substantial amount of the cost of demolition with the value of the scrap metal salvage. With their extensive business relationships in the scrap recycling industry, UWC was able to obtain top dollar for the scrap metals which helped the client with their demolition budget costs.

UWC utilized the following equipment and skilled manpower for this demolition project:

• A Cat 330L Excavator with a hydraulic hammer attachment;
• A Cat 330 Excavator with LaBounty Grapple attachment;
• A Cat 350 Excavator with LaBounty MSD 100 Shear attachment;
• A Cat 345 Excavator with LaBounty 3000 Rotating shear;
• A 110 hydraulic crane;
• Bobcat 773 Skid Steer with demo grapple;
• Bobcat 773 Skid Steer with hammer attachment;
• Various support equipment;
• 8 employees consisting of operators and laborers.

From start to finish, the work was completed in 4 months without incident or injury.
