Boerner Botanical Gardens is getting beautiful waterfalls created with the collection of rainwater from the building and parking lot. This started on Wednesday August 12 and is to be completed on Friday August 21. Collaboration between MMSD, Reinders and Aquascape, Inc. with Boerner has made this possible. Delightful Watergardens (delightfulwatergardens.com), a Certified Aquascape Contractor, is on site throughout the project to help make this happen.

Boerner is a place for educating the public besides showcasing beautiful gardens. This rain harvest and wetland filtration project will be a great example to surrounding communities. A homeowner, a business, a community all can create some type of a beautiful rain harvest feature. Rain harvesting waterfall projects can be done on very small scale to very large. Homeowner Day is Friday, Aug 21 for all to come and see the finished project and learn how the entire system works.

They are collecting all rainfall from roof of the Garden education building and even runoff from the parking lot. One downspout will go to a rain reservoir under a previous patio and it will have native bubbling rocks on the patio to aerate the stored water to prevent stagnation and growth of unhealthy bacteria. They will also use this reservoir for irrigation of that perennial garden. If you use rainwater which is extremely rich in nutrients to irrigate your landscape; you will reduce fertilizer use and no chemicals are added to rainwater. The other downspouts are all diverted to a culvert that will be camouflaged in the start of the waterfalls. Here the rain water will flow to a large wetland filtration reservoir which will then pump more water into the waterfalls. It will all be self contained with EDPM rubber liner. This is true sustainability with no need for chemicals.
“Creating Waterfalls and ponds are my passion and I am so excited to make them even more Eco-friendly than before! I hope more and more people will see how easy and wonderful it is to create their own rain harvest system.” said Krista Hull, owner of Delightful Watergardens.
