Recent advances in the field of X-ray diffraction (XRD) now make it possible to easily perform quantitative analysis of the common minerals associated with limestone, where previously X-ray diffraction has been considered too complex and costly for use by most limestone production facilities.

Leading this change is inXitu’s introduction of the BTX benchtop XRD analyzer enabling true, quantitative mineral determination in a cost-effective, easy-to-use instrument, with the capability to analyze alpha-quartz and asbestos minerals as well as common minerals such as, calcite and dolomite.

Regulation of crystalline silica - occupational exposure to respirable silica - remains a high priority on the agendas of global health and safety administrations in their drive to limit the disabling, dust-related lung disease, silicosis.

Limestone production, identified by regulators as an occupation at elevated risk of exposure to silica inhalation, can at last move forward with inXitu’s BTX X-ray diffraction instrument as the chosen method of analysis for precise quantitative determination of crystalline phases in respirable dust. An application study is available on request.

About inXitu, Inc.
inXitu, Inc. (inxitu.com) is a leader in portable XRD/XRF based instrumentation. They specialize in developing the technologies required to enable the next generation of scientific instruments used for materials analysis. The technology used in their portable rock and mineral analyzer received a prestigious R&D 100 award and was chosen to fly on the Mars Science Laboratory, Rover, scheduled for launch in 2009.

The companies powder handling methods can dramatically improve the quality of your XRD data while reducing the requirements for sample preparation. inXitu’s patented technique makes possible quality XRD data to be collected regardless of the grain size of the sample. Grain sizes up to 400 um have been tested producing data normally obtained with micron size particles.

Incorporating key technologies from their portable XRD instrument and advanced sample handling techniques, they are currently developing solutions targeted for identification and analysis in the areas of explosives, pharmaceuticals, forensics, art and archaeological materials. This new line of instruments will offer performance comparable to laboratory XRD systems with the benefit of portability, significantly reduced sample preparation and reduced cost.
