Committed to transforming agriculture, PASA, a statewide organization, used the event to promote profitable farms that produce healthy food while respecting the natural environment.
After a day showcasing the farmers’ proven methods and growing techniques through delicious beef dishes, the Judge’s Choice award went to Cressbrook Farm of Lancaster, while the Farmer’s Choice went to Kananga Farm of Ligonier. The contest featured beef submitted from animals raised on their mother’s milk and subsequently given a diet of grass, legumes, and herbs, creating a healthier alternative to industrial farmed beef, with no growth hormones or antibiotics.
Surrounded by the picturesque views of Glasbern Country Inn, 14 farms from across the state competed for the coveted awards in two categories, Judge’s Choice and Farmer’s Choice. A panel of professional chefs, food writers and passionate eaters judged each farm’s grilled steaks, focusing on taste and texture to award the Judge’s Choice trophy. New to the competition this year, entrants had the opportunity to take part in their own blind tasting of all the grilled steaks, rate each entry, and award a “Farmers’ Choice” ribbon to one lucky winner.
“It’s an honor to be recognized among these responsible Pennsylvania farms which produce healthy and delicious food,” said Larry Herr of Cressbrook Farm, winner of the Judge’s Choice award. “PASA’s message of sustaining land and making farming more viable is vital to not only Pennsylvania’s farming, but to the state’s economy as a whole.”
As “natural” food has grown in popularity and significance, Glasbern Country Inn has served as the epicenter of Pennsylvania’s grass-fed beef movement, providing the perfect setting for the competition.
