Created for its client Koninklijke Brill NV, the upgrade will provides Shibboleth access mechanism for scholarly publishing.
This is one of a number of Shibboleth implementations that Semantico has undertaken for leading global publishers in recent months, indicating growing mainstream acceptance of the Shibboleth protocol.
Over the last five years, Semantico has worked closely with Brill to develop a range of sophisticated online publications to match the complexity of the publisher’s academic publishing output. Its Brill Online site supports discovery and display in complex living and dead languages, such as in products like Brill’s New Pauly, Encyclopeadia of Islam, and the Encyclopaedia of the Qur’ān.
Semantico has also developed the Martinus Nijhoff Online site. Martinus Nijhoff Publishers (MNP) is an imprint of Brill whose portfolio focuses on areas in Public International Law, Human Rights, and Humanitarian Law.
Sam Bruinsma, Business Development Director from Brill said: ‘While we continue to expand our online services, increasingly we are meeting requests from library customers and library consortia around the world to provide them with Shibboleth. In the US, the UK, Europe and Australia this protocol to facilitate single sign-on access becomes more and more the new standard. Therefore we are delighted that Semantico has undertaken this project to help us to meet our customer’s demands.’
Richard Padley, Managing Director, Semantico, said: 'It's probably fair to say that we've reached a tipping point now as far as Shibboleth adoption is concerned, as the work we've done for Brill only emphasizes. Brill is a company with a substantial collection of online content, and is active in the US market where Shibboleth is now a must-have item. We're pleased to be able to help Brill take advantage of the opportunities offered by adoption of the protocol, which is now becoming firmly mainstream.'
