In his capacity at TransEnterix, Castro has overseen the development of the SPIDER™ system, a single-incision, single-port, multi-channel laparoscopic surgical platform that will allow a surgeon to remove a patient's gall bladder and perform other abdominal surgeries without leaving a visible scar.

Fewer complications, faster full recovery and an improved cosmetic result are potential benefits of the new technology. Conventional laparoscopy currently involves three to five incisions, which typically leave small scars in a patient’s abdomen. Surgeons in the United States perform more than 2.5 million laparoscopic procedures each year.

In his 25 years of experience creating medical devices, Castro has accumulated more than 60 worldwide patents.

“When it comes to medical device research and development, Sal is one of the most sought-after leaders in the device world,” said Todd M. Pope, president and CEO. “Sal has significant experience turning great ideas into tangible applications that improve how physicians treat patients.”

Castro began his career with U.S. Surgical Corporation, now known as Covidien. He led a team at Surgical Dynamics, later a division of Stryker Medical, that created the Ray Fusion Cage™, a titanium spine implant that has become the gold standard in surgically treating degenerative disc disease.

Most recently, Castro led the capital equipment and disposable medical device group at Gyrus ACMI, an Olympus Medical company, a leader in medical device visualization.

TransEnterix (transenterix.com), an emerging medical device company, partners with the world’s leading medical thought leaders to rapidly develop pioneering technologies that revolutionize minimally invasive surgery. The company has secured $21 million in Series A venture capital funding.
