The Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures (RMM) has become a legend in the nursing profession in its numerous print editions, and is regarded as the standard reference on nursing good practice, widely used also in training.

The online version of RMM, created for Wiley-Blackwell by Semantico, extends the usefulness of the print editions by employing User Generated Content (UGC) to enable local trusts to add their own Trust-specific procedure guidelines. Users can comment on procedures in the Manual and add extra information which carries their attribution and contact details. A sophisticated back-end puts control and workflow in the hands of the individual Trust, enabling administrators to manage the workflow process and set their own schedules for review.

Dr Jon Walmsley, Managing Director (Professional), Wiley-Blackwell said: ‘Nurses perform a complex and vital role. Our aim is to support them with information-tools that enable them to work effectively and efficiently and achieve excellence in nursing. We are privileged to work with the dedicated team at The Royal Marsden, and delighted with the user-friendliness and functionality that Semantico have delivered.'

Shelley Dolan, Chief Nurse at The Royal Marsden Hospital, said: ‘I am delighted that The Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures is now available online. We are extremely proud of the manual and its success and of our working partnership with both Wiley-Blackwell and Semantico.

The online manual is a great example of how excellent education and clinical training for nurses has moved into the 21st century, making expert clinical guidance and training available at the touch of a button.’

Richard Padley, Managing Director, Semantico, said: ‘Our industry pays a lot of lip service to concepts such as embedding content in workflow, and the power of Web 2.o for learning and performance support, but it takes pioneering projects like this one to show how powerful this stuff can really be in practice. Here is an online resource that goes way beyond the book model, and proves that we truly are into the 3rd wave of publishers engaging with online, as well as showing new possibilities for e-learning based around authoritative texts.’

About The Royal Marsden
The Royal Marsden opened its doors in 1851 as the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer treatment, research and education.

For over 150 years, it has been passionate about sharing its knowledge of cancer. This passion and commitment led us to develop The Royal Marsden School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation, the UK's only dedicated provider of cancer education.

Today, together with its academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research, The Royal Marsden is the largest and most comprehensive cancer centre in Europe treating over 40,000 patients every year. It is a centre of excellence, and the only NHS Trust to achieve the highest possible ranking in the Healthcare Commission’s Annual Health Check for the third year in a row.

Since 2004, the hospital’s charity, The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign, has helped raise over £43 million to build theatres, diagnostic centres, and drug development units.

Prince William became President of The Royal Marsden in 2007, following a long royal connection with the hospital.
