The Biblical Archaeology Society (BAS) announces the seminar series “Exploring Babylon and the Bible: Connections and Contrasts” presenting Dr. Alan Millard of the University of Liverpool. Ports of call on the seven-day cruise will include the stunning locales of Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Oranjestad in Aruba, and Willemstad in Curaçao. Set against the backdrop of these lush and exotic Caribbean islands, Professor Millard’s presentation will bring participants the latest theories and research regarding the connections between ancient Babylon and the Judeo-Christian world in his seven-part lecture series, which includes an exclusive question-and-answer session, as well as the following topics:

• Babylon: The Land, the People and their Languages;
• Stories of Creation: Babylon and Genesis;
• Sargon, Abraham and the Amorites: History vs. Legend;
• Law, Wisdom and Piety: What does the Bible Owe to Babylon?

• Nebuchadnezzar's 'Great Babylon': Was Daniel Really There?

Professor Millard studied Ancient Semitic Languages at the universities of Oxford and London, was employed in the Department of Western Asiatic Antiquities at the British Museum, served as librarian at Tyndale Library for Biblical Research in Cambridge for seven years and has taught at the University of Liverpool since 1970, where he was awarded a personal chair as Rankin Professor of Hebrew and Ancient Semitic Languages in 1992.

He has worked on archaeological excavations in Syria including Tell Rifa‘at (ancient Arpad), and Tell Nebi Mend (ancient Qadesh on the Orontes), Jordan (Petra) and Iraq (Nimrud). In 1984 he held a fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, working with the late Yigael Yadin. He has published editions of Babylonian and Assyrian cuneiform tablets, among them Atrahasis: The Babylonian Story of the Flood (with W. G. Lambert), La Statue royale deTell Fekherye et son inscription bilingue assyro-araméenne (with A. Abou Assaf and P. Bordreuil) and Eponyms of the Assyrian Empire.
