The Tarheel Junior Golf Tour, operated by the Tarheel Golf Foundation, has released its 2009-2010 schedule of events for elite junior golfers. The season runs from September-May and includes a series of twelve 36-hole nationally-ranked golf tournaments. The season opening event is scheduled on September 26-27, 2009 at The University of North Carolina's A.E. Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, NC, a challenging Fazio designed golf course that is home to the University of North Carolina Tarheels. Other venues include Ford's Colony at Rocky Mount, NC, The Reece Jones redesigned Duke University Golf Club in Durham, NC home to the Duke University Blue Devils Golf Teams, The Donald Ross designed, Mid Pines Resort near Pinehurst, NC, The PGA Tour's Tournament Players Club at Wakefield Plantation designed by Hale Irwin in Raleigh, NC and The Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, NC the newest NCAA Division I golf course in the United States which serves as the new home for the NC State University Wolfpack golf teams.
"The lineup and scheduling of golf courses was designed to allow the elite junior golfer an opportunity to play on five of the top collegiate golf courses in North America as well as the venue of a leading Nationwide Tour Event", said Bob Gerard, a Director, "we also scheduled events to avoid conflicts with SAT testing dates and other times when high school players have a lot on their plates. We also spaced the events out, some as much as four weeks apart so that players can take what they learn from each event and practice without having to get right back on the course the next week to compete. Young players have a lot of demands with school, social activities and family life, that it just makes sense to allow more than a week or two between events whenever possible." All Tarheel Junior Tour events (tarheelgolf.org) are within a 60 minute drive from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
The tour exists to provide competitive playing opportunities to its membership. Members include players from five countries and 14 US states. With over 450 members, many of whom have won major national and international competitions tournament fields are strong and fill up early. The tour will post the complete schedule on its website on July 1, 2009 and entries will open shortly thereafter.
