Blinking Star Antiques has embraced the National Antiques “Week” theme for 2009: Antiques Are Green. To celebrate Environment Week (May 31 - June 6, 2009), they’re looking for submissions that showcase the innovative nature of people to use what they’ve got to its fullest advantage. If you’ve rescued, reused, or repurposed something, you’re showing the spirit that gave us the antiques we love today.
“Antiques really are green. Antiques made before the 1880s are by far the most green, as they were made by hand using locally-available materials. Even items made at the beginning of the 20th century that were mass-produced have had their footprint diminish over the generations,” explains Elizabeth Campbell Duke, owner of Blinking Star Antiques in Union Bay British Columbia. “We are now starting to realise that we do have to make the most of the things and materials we already have in our possession, and it’s fun as well. You have bragging rights over something you’ve put some effort into - especially if you rescued it for free or for very little money.”
It was this spirit, too, that created many of the antiques we have today. People not only valued the items they had, but the materials from which they were made. The intersection of environmental concerns and the financial “austerity measures” we find ourselves in makes the time right to celebrate what we already have.
