A sort of Gladiators’ version of dog showing, the thrilling canine competition consists of a circus-like obstacle course that calls dogs to climb through tunnels, navigate teeter-totters, jump through tires, and weave through wires, among other feats—all at the verbal behest of their handlers. A stunning display of the dog-owner bond, a professional competition is a showcase for hard-won communication, tireless training, and, well, agility.
While the sport is of grave importance to some owners, a local dog boarding facility has realized its potential for (dare we say it) just plain fun. The Kennels of Springdale, a fully outfitted and idyllic “home away from home” for dogs (and cats) positioned on nine lush acres in Arroyo Grande’s Corbett Canyon, celebrates its third year of business under new ownership by offering a membership-based agility facility (a.k.a. a playground) for both professional and amateur pups and their owners.
With very reasonable membership dues (or a day-use fee) dog owners and their aspiring (or fun-loving) companions can come any time during daylight hours to train (or play) on the jungle gym-like agility course. The Kennels of Springdale (kennelsofspringdale.com), which also provides boarding, grooming, training, daycare, and playgroups, will additionally offer agility training classes for novices.
Deborah Wilson and Chris McKinnie, co-owners of the Kennels of Springdale, see the agility park as a great opportunity for pet owners of all types. “Many dog owners have never tried agility because it is usually only available to those with serious competitive ambitions for their usually pure-bred dogs,” says Wilson. “Now the average non-professional dog owner has a professionally-outfitted park where they can go, whether for exercise, recreation, or more serious practice.”
Wilson and McKinnie welcome beginners to classes or “open gym.” For more information about The Kennels of Springdale, or to sign up for membership, a trial, or drop in use, call 805-549-9832 or visit their website.
