The ECD seat has a startlingly different profile. The long thin part of the seat, known as the ‘nose’, has been removed, to reduce pressure on the sensitive perineum area and shift the cyclist’s weight back onto the sit bones.
This gives a wide range of riders – from commuting to pleasure and general fitness - the enjoyment and health benefits of a longer ride without paying the price of discomfort or risk to their health.
The ECD Seat is already gaining exposure and will be used as part of the Be Number 1 Land's End to John O'Groats project - B#1 LEJOG, which will see a number of athletes, including B~1 founder and Atlantic Rower Hugo Ambrose and Olympic Sailing Gold Medallist Sarah Gosling tackle the route from Land's End to John O'Groats in various ways. The challenge takes place in June to raise money for The British Heart Foundation.
The brand founders are Jonathan Wallach and Mark Burns, whose interest in cycling without unnecessary discomfort prompted them to launch the ECD Seat, designed by Thomas White, former head of industrial design at Boeing Commercial Airplane.
Jonathan Wallach explains: “My son wanted to support the British Heart Foundation by cycling in last year’s London-to-Brighton. I decided to ride with him, so a few months before the 55-mile race, started training. The pain almost stopped me from doing the ride, and this got me looking for alternatives. I discovered the noseless seat design on the West Coast (USA), and was able to finish both the training and the race itself with no further discomfort.”
Mark Burns, a committed triathlete adds: “Cycling’s fantastic for all-round fitness but for me the enormous health benefits of longer rides were being compromised by seat problems. When we discovered this new design, I immediately took to it. Not long after, we decided to create ECD and launch the design in the UK.”
Health professionals also welcome the ECD Seat. Dr. J R W Harris, Consultant GU Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, London comments: "Each year I see a number of people who have suffered from prolonged riding on conventional seats, causing them discomfort and sometimes leading to health problems. What I like about this seat is that it has been ergonomically designed to enable the cyclist to sit more naturally. This is a breakthrough in comfort design for cyclists."
The ECD Seat is simple and quick to fit on most styles of bike, and available in two designs: Vinyl - Foam at £39.99 and Lycra - Gel at £49.99. The seats can be purchased directly from ECD’s website.
