In the “Evening of Honor” ceremony held May 6, 2009, Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) presented PC Laptops founder and president, Dan “The Laptop Man” Young, with a 2009 Distinguished Alumnus award.
Young was one of only two alumni (along with local musician Paul Cardall), to be honored as a 2009 Distinguished Alumni of SLCC. The award recognizes a former SLCC student who is an exemplary community member and natural leader that SLCC students and graduates can look to as an example of what they can accomplish in their own lives.
“Dan Young is a true boot-strapper, a self-made man who is a portrait of success and a sign of hope for a bright and promising future to every Salt Lake Community College graduate,” said Matt Bunker, alumni director at Salt Lake Community College. “For this honor, we seek out alumni we feel are role models to our students – examples of how to utilize the education earned at SLCC and apply it to the best of their ability in their lives. An example of success is not something one can aspire to be, you either are or aren’t, and Dan embodies the great spirit of perseverance and achievement we hope to instill in all of our students and graduates.”
Young is a first-generation American and began attending computer-training camp at the young age of six. His first experience in providing unmatched customer service came after the electronics retailer Young was working for went out of business. He then offered to honor the service warranties of his former company’s entire customer base—charging nothing other than a fee for parts.
In 1992, Young founded Elite Systems and just two years later, the company changed its name to PC Laptops and opened its first store in Salt Lake City selling desktop and portable computer systems. When several computer companies folded, Young again used his business model to honor those companies’ service agreements to their former customers. Today, PC Laptops currently operates nine retail outlets, a Web site and employs nearly 100 people in Utah and Nevada.
“To be honored by my alma mater, recognized for my achievements and deemed a student role model is a great compliment,” Young said. “I am grateful for the education and technical training I received while working on my General Studies at SLCC and the ways that my time spent at the college helped prepare me for my future.
“If I could pass one piece of advice on to the graduating class of 2009, it would be this: ‘Set solid goals, do absolutely your best, and learn from your mistakes.’”
Since overcoming the challenges of his youth in south Los Angeles, Young has now driven PC Laptops to several listings in the Utah 100, an annual ranking of the fastest growing companies in the state, and PC Laptops was recently named the No. 1 Computer Store in the Salt Lake Region in a Citadel Broadcasting Survey. PC Laptops has also been listed among the fastest growing companies in America by Inc. magazine two years running. Young frequently speaks at schools and colleges and enjoys teaching “the love” to young aspiring entrepreneurs.
