Three cases have been successfully completed at the ambulatory surgery center since April, 2009. Partial knee replacement sometimes referred to as a "uni-knee" (short for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty), is a recent advance in treatment for arthritis of the knee joint. The partial knee replacement surgery has become an accepted alternative to total knee replacement because it is less invasive, less painful, and offers patients a faster recovery. By offering the procedure in an outpatient environment, patients also benefit from the comfort and convenience of recovery and physical therapy in their own home. Postoperative support is provided by in-home nursing and therapy services. "By receiving this procedure at Grand Valley Surgical Center, patients can be confident that they are receiving the highest quality care at a significantly lower cost than an in-patient stay in the hospital", said Dr. Vasiu.
One of the key components in the feasibility of complex orthopedic surgery such as partial joint replacement is advanced regional anesthesia. Regional anesthesia involves placement of local anesthetic near the nerves that supply a specific surgical site thereby lowering the amount of pain medication patients may need immediately after surgery. According to Douglas F. Wiseman, MD, Grand Valley Surgery Center is at the forefront of incorporating these techniques in clinical practice. Grand Valley Surgery Center's program, under the direction of Scot Hendrick, DO, was the first ambulatory surgery center in West Michigan to offer ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. The use of regional anesthesia in the out patient setting typically allows patients to recover faster from their anesthetic, go home sooner, and generally makes the initial recovery period smoother.
