Agora Gallery is pleased to present a two-part art exhibition scheduled to run from June 2, 2009 through June 23, 2009. By exploring such undiscovered vantage points and often-overlooked inspirations, this collection of artists was selected because they present the world to viewers with an unusual candor. Whether with grit or finesse, the paintings grouped together in Unbound Perspectives display a timeless artistic past time: to unseat the audience from their comfortable and mundane perceptions of reality.
In his deeply spiritual and breathtakingly beautiful paintings of the Tibetan culture and landscape, Taiwanese artist Terry Wang opens a proverbial curtain to a window into a foreign land little seen by outsiders. Documenting his yearlong journey through the harsh climate of mountainous Tibet, Wang painted the scenery around him, taking note of a treasured geography that few people often see. Although Wang comes from an ancient tradition of ink brush painting, his works convey a decidedly Western influence, incorporating brush strokes, color pallet and vibrant emotion seen in works by such seminal painters as Vincent van Gogh. Painted "en plein air", Wang's paintings truly capture the mood and ambiance of a place known to so many only in pictures. Terry Wang's groundbreaking paintings of the Tibetan landscape and ethnography will soon be published in an anthology. The artist, who has formally studied painting and sculpture at Guangzhou University, lives and works in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
In part two, The Substance of Abstraction, audiences are presented with a rich kaleidoscope of color, form, and texture that in conjunction breathes life into abstract artworks. Whether employing shimmering brushstrokes or bold fields of color, nonrepresentational art, with its lack of familiar forms, allows the work speak to us on an especially elemental level. Through their deeply personal forms of expression, these artists offer a stunning glimpse into contemporary abstract painting.
