The Herbert G. Wellington collection, considered one of the most distinguished of its kind, spans three decades of collecting and includes objects from every major tribe in North America. The Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibited the collection in 1983 and several objects in this sale are discussed and illustrated in “Pleasing the Spirits: A Catalogue of a Collection of American Indian Art” by Douglas C. Ewing, 1982. Highlights of the sale include Lot 26, a Zia Olla Storage vessel, with a minimum bid of $20,000. Also with a minimum bid of $20,000 is Lot 27, a Cochiti storage vessel. The sale is also offering an extensive angling library, including Lot 399, a signed limited edition copy of Erick Taverner’s Salmon Fishing, London 1931, with a minimum bid of $2500.
