The golf tournament will take place Friday, October 16th at The Courses at Andrews Air Force Base at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area, with all proceeds benefiting the foundation.
An excellent opportunity to network, enjoy a round of golf and offer support in the fight against breast cancer, the tournament is open to the public. Registration will be at 8:30 am and the tournament will begin at 9:30 am, with lunch, an awards ceremony and a silent auction following. Golfers will compete for the title over 18 holes. The entrance fee of $100 per individual includes a buffet lunch, a best ball tournament, one range token with unlimited range balls, the use of the practice facility one hour prior to tee-off and various on-course fundraising contests. Prizes will be given for the longest drive as well as the player that gets closest to the pin. The winning team of the tournament overall will receive $1,000. Additional prizes will be raffled off and a silent auction will also be held.
“We are extremely proud to support such an important cause,” said SGIS COO Vince Virga. “Events such as this are only possible through the participation and sponsorship of generous individuals and organizations, so we encourage everyone to get involved. It is our hope that people will contribute in any way they can and aid us in raising money for the foundation. Breast cancer patients and survivors need all the support they can get; it is vital that we all do our part. With our help, Susan G. Komen for the Cure can continue the fight against breast cancer.”
The tournament will involve local and national businesses through sponsorship. A great way to get publicity, sponsorship can showcase services and products such as golf products, catering services and merchandise to be used for the silent auction. “We have many spaces available for sponsors at different levels,” said Virga. “The benefits include free entrance to the tournament, on-site signage and recognition in marketing materials. We also encourage members of the community to make donations or volunteer their time.”
According to the American Cancer Society 1, the statistics for breast cancer are alarming:
• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, except for skin cancers.
• The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about 1 in 8 (12% of women). Women living in North America have the highest rate of breast cancer in the world. At this time there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
• Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman’s death is about 1 in 35 (3%). Death rates from breast cancer continue to decline. This decline is believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment. 1
