xDSL's increasing popularity due to its ability to compete against new-age technologies such as fiber and cable has had a positive impact on the xDSL test equipment market.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (testandmeasurement.frost.com), World xDSL Test Equipment Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $252.6 million in 2008 and estimates this to reach $380.0 million in 2013.

Novel technologies challenge incumbent service providers of broadband technologies to provide triple play services in the DSL deployment in order to improve their average revenue per user (ARPU). Since they provide triple play service in their existing, aging copper lines, it becomes important to test and monitor these copper lines before and after xDSL deployment, which augurs well for the test equipment vendors.

"Meanwhile, legacy DSL technologies have successfully evolved due to the accessibility of alternate technologies at a time when there was a demand for higher rates for implementing Internet Protocol television (IPTV) and voice-on-demand (VoD) features," says Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Sivakumar Narayanaswamy. "The availability of techniques such as copper bonding that use inverse multiplexing methods and deep fiber rollouts with very high bit rate DSL2 (VDSL2) is expected to buoy the market."

However, test equipment vendors must be wary of the impact of the economic uncertainties, since it could lead to capital expenditure (capex) freezing by service providers, carriers, and network equipment manufacturers.

Moreover, the deployment of DSL lines, and xDSL test equipment could take a hit with customers looking to stretch the use of the installed base during this phase of budgetary limits. Test equipment vendors hope to offset some of the cost issues by offering a better functionality and improved features.

"Because of the need to develop cost-effective test equipment, vendors in this space seek greater integration of test solutions that satisfy the testing requirement of converging technologies used in deploying broadband," notes Narayanaswamy. "They must also invest more in research and development to address complex testing requirements and offer easy-to-use equipment."
