It is not often that you see on the front page of a newspaper the headlines “Seas Rise”, “Rainforests Retreats”, “Weather Worsens”, “Drought Spreads”, “Ecosystems Collapse” and “Famine Grows” in large red letters. Clearly this has stirred up some alarm in the editor’s office. In this sophistic world publicising the issue can help to resolve the issue.
Green supporters have started to recognise the macro issue of the Earth‘s dilemma rather than focusing on the micro issue. Tony Juniper, director of Friends of the Earth said “It is technologically possible to reduce our emissions and deliver significantly two degrees” as opposed to the fatal three. Sir David King, Blair’s chief scientist sees three degrees as inevitable however, and so advocates nuclear power following the example of Professor James Lovelock who is a leading environmental scientist.
The debate is over whether we can keep the temperature rise to two degrees or if as Bush’s chief climate advisor James Connaughton believes, no one can forecast a safe carbon dioxide level and attempts to reach unrealistic targets could damage the world economy. Sir David King however, warned that politicians who relied on technological advances to produce cleaner fuels should listen to scientists, because by the time those technologies had been developed it would be far too late.
Professor King in a BBC Radio 4 interview said it was essential that the world began to make the necessary changes now. “We don’t have to succumb to a state of despondency where we say that there is nothing we can do,” indeed he is quite proactive in encouraging Mr Blair to adopt CO2 reducing measures in the form of a new generation of nuclear power stations.
Paul Watkinson of Gaiaoo said that “This is a Global Issue seeking a Global Solution. Half of the world‘s population use only 1% of the fossil fuel resources and that is not the westernised half, so it can be done and Gaiaoo is promoting and enabling a self help approach. Since the industrial revolution we have been polluting the atmosphere and now it is turning critical for the human race. Gaiaoo calls upon Governments to do more to support initiatives and avoid disaster.”
The public can support the Gaiaoo Initiative by signing up online for free to an online petition for their town or city to make governments think globally and locally about Global Warming. Gaiaoo also gives local groups a resource and focal point to encourage ways of reducing fossil fuel use, such as recycling, car sharing and the buying of local produce!
