Hudson, NH, United States, 04/20/2009 - The Town of Kensington has been awarded a grant from the New Hampshire Dept of Agriculture, Markets and Food to demonstrate that lawns in poor condition can be improved and maintained without the use of toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.
This will be the first site of its kind in New Hampshire.
The projects first work day will be on Wednesday April 22, 2009 at 9 am. The Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire will be sending fifty students as part of their Community Action Day to get their hands dirty spreading compost on the Kensington Town Hall and Library lawns. They will learn about non-toxic organic practices for lawn care, as part of the Kensington Organic Turf Project.
Project Leaders Felicia Motherway, Resident of Kensington, New Hampshire and Chester Mandrik, Founder of Yard Spice Organics, Hudson, New Hampshire will be educating the students about the project. Both leaders have been encouraging individuals, families and business to stop using toxic chemicals on their lawns. They both believe that lawn chemicals and pesticides are harmful to children, people, pets, drinking water and the environment.
As recently as December 2007, a Star Research Study, funded by U.S. EPA has reported that Scientists are finding increasing evidence that exposure to some environmental factors jeopardizes children’s health and may relate to large increases in the number of children diagnosed with asthma, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, and developmental impairment. Evidence is also strong that environmental health risks disproportionately affect children. - results show that not only is there an association between prenatal exposures to high levels of pesticides and neurodevelopment delays, but also that symptoms of these delays begin to present strongly during preschool years. (EPA/600/S-07/038 | December 2007 | U.S. EPA also indicates that out of 30 commonly used pesticides – 19 of which, are linked to cancer or birth defects.
The Town of Kensington did start to go organic on town owned land in October 2008 with the new “Sawyer Park” in 2009, which is used by thousands of children within and surrounding communities. Both project leaders Motherway and Mandrik had an impact in bringing this change forward.
