Paso Robles, CA, United States, 04/14/2009 - The small and often underappreciated honeybee pollinates our flowers, keeps our agriculture industries flourishing, and helps ensure the production of 30% of our diets. Now, a candle company is giving us another reason to be grateful for the honeybee.

In 2007, when the native population of honeybees suffered a sudden epidemic, the entire country was reminded of the vital importance of those unassuming little insects. Instrumental in everything from the blooming of a single flower to enabling multibillion-dollar agriculture industries and indirectly providing a third of Americans’ diets, the honeybee Colony Collapse Disorder (as it was dubbed) quickly turned into a major human emergency. Crops died. Honeycombs went dry. Almonds could not be produced. And, at a small, boutique candle making factory in California’s wine country, artisan candle makers looked at their natural beeswax supplies with an all-new perspective.
VERIS, an old-world style, high-end candle and bath factory on California’s Central Coast that specializes in making beeswax candles, got busy finding a way to bolster the bees that are so essential to their beautiful, aromatic, and all-natural hand poured candles.
“With honeybees playing such an integral role in the making of our products, we simply could not turn a blind eye to their plight,” says VERIS owner and founder Lisa Zimmerman-Hansen. “We felt compelled to show our gratitude to them and to do our part to ensure that they recuperate and thrive.”
Joining efforts with University of California Davis, the largest, longest standing, and most comprehensive state-supported apiculture facility and staff in North America, and the leader in the honeybee recovery campaign, VERIS set out to make candles with a higher purpose. The result is a new line of VERIS candles, called “Bee Grateful,” which benefits the UC Davis Honeybee Research Fund to support research, education, and outreach efforts in the areas of honeybee biology, health, and pollination services.
Made with hand poured, 100% pure beeswax from U.S. apiaries, the candles come in small glass votives and bright yellow and black packaging emblazoned with an artful illustration of the bee beneficiary. With up to 20 hours of burn time, these delightful honey-hued candles—infused with lavender essential oil (a favorite flower of the honeybee)—remind users that “A healthy bee makes a happy planet!”
Like all VERIS products, “Bee Grateful” candles are wicked, scented and poured by hand using only the finest naturally-filtered beeswax, cotton wicking and plant essential oils. Products are free of paraffin and other petroleum-derived waxes; metal-cored wicks; synthetic hardeners and adhesion agents; chemical dyes; and color fixatives.
Patrons can witness the honeybee rescue effort first-hand by watching artisans pour “Bee Grateful” candles and other products at the VERIS factory and showroom in Paso Robles, CA. VERIS handmade candle and bath products are also sold in over 150 stores nationwide, in addition to their numerous private label accounts. The California showroom is open daily, Monday – Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 11-4, and is located at 2103 Wisteria Lane in Paso Robles, California.
