The mutual building society uses the scheme, now in its third year, to encourage its members to vote at its annual general meeting. For every qualifying proxy voting form returned, it donates 50p to local causes. This year, it is sharing the money equally between Florence Nightingale Hospice in Aylesbury and the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home in Tring.
Paul Kilbride, chief executive of Chesham Building Society, commented, “Being mutual means we are governed by our members, the people who hold accounts with us. They can make the most of this by voting at our AGM, and naturally we’re pleased we can support our local hospices at the same time.”
“I would like to thank Chesham Building Society and their voting members for the fantastic donation,” said Lindsey Fealey, head of fundraising at Florence Nightingale Hospice. “This equates to six visits by our Children’s Hospice at Home team, who provide practical support and respite care for families caring for children with a life-limiting condition, or gives seven patients the opportunity to attend our Day Hospice for therapeutic relief of distressing symptoms and social and spiritual support.”
Liz Clarke, Head of Fundraising at Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, said, “We would like to thank all of the people who voted. The donation is enough to cover the cost of 30 hours of specialist care for people with terminal illnesses across the Chilterns area. It helps us to care for these people at home, rather than in a hospice, when that is what they prefer.”
Chesham Building Society’s AGM typically deals with such matters as the annual accounts, directors' report, directors' remuneration and auditor's report.
Chesham Building Society (cheshambs.co.uk) encourages and supports projects, programmes and activities that strengthen the communities in which its employees and members live and work, and those that sustain and improve its local environment. Other causes it has supported in the last year include Chiltern Sea Cadets, Little Chalfont Good Companions Club, Relate Mid Thames & Buckinghamshire and Chesham High School.
As a mutual organisation, Chesham Building Society's commitment to consumers is its priority. It has no external shareholders to pay, so it can use its profits to offer competitive interest rates to its members. This is the unique benefit that consumers get when they belong to a building society.
Because of its responsible lending policies, Chesham Building Society has one of the lowest mortgage arrears rates in the industry. It has branches in Chesham, Aylesbury and Little Chalfont, and provides funding and active support to charities and good causes in the local area.
Florence Nightingale Hospice strives to provide the highest possible quality of life for in-patients with terminal or life-threatening illness. It does so by managing pain and symptoms and responding to patients' psychological, social and spiritual needs. The variety of services offered include: in-patients’ beds, a day hospice, specially trained nurses who provide care both in the community and at the hospice, a lymphoedema clinic, a Children’s Hospice at Home team and a bereavement service.
The Iain Rennie Hospice at Home is a registered charity offering specialist and supportive care and advice for patients with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses in their homes. It also aims to help the relatives and those carers close to the patient during the illness and bereavement period.
