When former WBZ-TV anchor Liz Walker was a little girl, her mother always reminded her “A good name is rather to be chosen than riches.” Liz, a media icon in Boston for more than 28 years, says that proverb has always ruled over her decisions about career and public life.
And she has stuck to it. She is an ordained minister, the co-founder of a humanitarian group working in the Sudan, on the board of numerous foundations and philanthropic efforts and a sought-after speaker for charitable events around the country. Her name carries considerable weight in ”do good” circles.
Liz is now lending her name to an innovative commercial venture. It’s the direct marketing of Vanash, a groundbreaking treatment for dry, chafed and ashy skin, with a hefty part of profits earmarked for charitable contributions. Vanash calls this effort it’s Buck-A-Tube” program. “For each and every tube of Vanash sold,” says Liz, “we will give a full dollar to a cause our customers select.” That amount is significantly greater than what other commercial enterprises typically donate in their cause marketing programs.
Walker is joined in this ambitious effort by Boston Celtics great ML Carr, former MIT Dean for Graduate Students Ike Colbert and the group of scientists and doctors who developed Vanash. This group, at Boston Derm Labs, is led by Dr. Mike Rothman, an MIT Innovation Center Award winner. It includes former and current faculty of MIT, as well as Harvard and Boston University medical schools. Liz adds: “We call ourselves Team Vanash, and we are all committed to the philosophy of doing some good for other people, especially in these challenging economic times.”
The first groups lined up to benefit from Vanash largesse include the Joslin Diabetes Center; the Jubilee Christian Church; and Fresh Start Family Services, founded by Leon Powe, where foster youths become independent, contributing members of their community through mentorships and independent living skills services.
