New Delhi, Delhi, India, 04/10/2006 - Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) the largest telecommunications service provider of India, has registered an impressive growth of 55.64 percentage in adding Direct Exchange Lines (DELs).

BSNL has been able to achieve it despite stiff competition from all private operators.
The company has also clocked a 9 % percent mark up over its operating income of year 2004-05, in the just concluded financial year on 31, March 2006. This has been possible despite all tariff reductions.
As against the target of 5800 village public telephones (VPTs), BSNL installed 16,333 VPTs putting a total of 5.35 lakhs villages in telephone network of India.
Reaffirming its prime position as the largest telecom service provider of the country, BSNL added 82.27 lakh DELs in 2005-06. The company surpassed its annual target of 75 lakhs and added 82.27 lakh lines during the year 2005-06. The net addition of DELs in 2004-05 was 52.86 lakhs. The gross achievements were 120 lakhs of DELs in 2005-06 as against 87.03 lakhs 2004-05.
The total number of DELs in BSNL network stood at a whopping 5.51 crores on 31 March 2006 as compared to 4.69 crores as on 31 March 2005 This is after offsetting all the disconnections. The company has a net positive growth in both landlines as well as in mobile. The net growth is 5.12 lakhs in landline and 77.15 lakh in mobile.
The operating income of the company too registered an upward increase of 9 percent during the financial year ended on 31st March 2006. As against the total operating income of Rs 36,090 crores in the year 2004-05, the provisional figures for the year 2005-06 was Rs.39,500 crores.
BSNL could also reduce the number of wait lists for telephones, both landline and mobile phones during the financial year 2005-06. The wait list of 16.20 lakhs in the year 2004-05 was reduced to 12.69 lakhs as on 31, March 2006. The company continued to have wait lists in all its area of operations for landlines. BSNL has also a waitlist of 58, 8652 for its mobile phones.
The company continued to be leaders in the providing Internet and also broadband connections. BSNL added only 7.23 lakhs Internet connections and 5.52 lakhs broadband connections. The total number of Internet subscribers stood at 2.50 million and the number of broadband users stood at 5.86 lakhs as on 31, March 2006.
BSNL was able to achieve 7.92 lakhs to its rural network. The total number of rural telephones stood at 1.43 crores.
The company continued to add more optical fibre cables to its network as against the target of 15,000 route kilo meters, the company added 18,256 kilo meters of optical fiber cable. The total number of OFC stood at 4.80 route kilometers in the network.
BSNL also added 820 Kilo Circuits of trunk automatic exchanges (TAX) as against the target of 620 Kilo Circuits. The total number of TAX facility stood at 6647 Kilo Circuits at the end of the financial year.
BSNL intend to add 10 million connections in the current financial year, in which 90 percent will be on wireless technology. Out of 10 million connections, one million will be in the rural areas. This is in line with our commitment to provide to telecommunications in rural areas. The company intend to add 1.4 million Internet subscribers in which at least 0.6 million will be on broadband connections. The OFC and TAX will be added to provide to take care of traffic requirements and to provide state-of-the-art technology to our esteemed customers.
BSNL is going to use its franchise network, 20 lakh PCO network, post offices, direct selling agents, customer service centres etc, as a sales and distribution channels to make the services fully accessible to the customers.
BSNL has floated a mega tender of 45.5 million lines for the mobile connections. The bidder’s conference will be held in last week of this month. BSNL intends to complete the whole process in 4 months time.
