Canton native, Mike Murphy, is making a name for himself as a gifted R&B balladeer. He will be releasing his sophomore album entitled LOVE. This album is a bold collection of songs that communicates the joy and complexity of love and relationships. His first single “Hopeless” is an expression of honest emotion and personal vulnerability. Although the album is laced with everything from ballads to club tracks, Murphy’s smooth, hypnotic vocals permeate throughout.
“It just seemed right to release the album first in my hometown. Canton, Ohio is where my Dad was a minister at Open Door Chapel. I still have people saying to me…Hey aren’t you Gospel Gus’s kid who used to sing in the church?” Explains Murphy.
Long-time Canton residents may already be familiar with the name Mike Murphy, or at least his family’s impact in Canton’s inner city community. In the 1980’s, his father established the Open Door Chapel and developed a popular Sunday school program, Gospel Gus, in downtown Canton. Murphy’s extensive background in gospel music allowed him to explore his soulful side, contributing to his smooth R&B style and heartfelt lyrics. While the church helped to form Murphy's early musical roots, his inspiration also came from his experiences in the US Army. While serving in the Army, Murphy was selected by Army Entertainment to participate in the 2000 U.S. Army Show. He traveled around the world entertaining the US troops as an R&B vocalist. Mike Murphy’s forthcoming album Love is set to release on Valentine’s Day 2009 in Canton, OH and is currently available at The Spot in Canton Center Mall and special kiosks in Belden Village Mall. Love launched globally on itunes.com March 3rd 2009.
