Anderton, Lancashire, United Kingdom, 2006/04/05 - TrainThis.com, a new website targetted at IT trainers, provides free resources for delivering courses..
The Fourth Level, a leading trainer development firm, has launched TrainThis.com, a website that provides free resources to IT trainers. Trainers can browse the suggestions for how to best facilitate a course, as well as download course materials and example files for use in training, completely free and without need to register.
"It has been a work of love", explained Maria Smith, Partner at The Fourth Level. "We want IT trainers to be able to share best-practice course designs, and TrainThis.com is our tool for making that happen. All of the courses are based on cutting-edge principles for facilitating learning, including the need to 'keep it real' and 'make the learners wrestle'".
John Salt, also a Partner at The Fourth Level, added that "Originally we'd intended to provide these resources solely for the benefit of our clients. But an experiment made us realise that any IT trainer could benefit from the training suggestions and the materials provided, so we decided to open it up to all".
That's not to say that money will never exchange hands, for whilst all the materials are available in a free downloadable version, if you want to edit them then you need to pay £200 per course. "If the course meets your needs as-is", continues Salt, "then you can use it for free. If on the other hand you want to amend the materials, for example to add your own branding, then you need to buy the editables. But they're only £200 per course, so trainers often find that it is worth buying the editables. And of that price, £150 goes to the author of the course, and we only take the remainder for our costs".
Indeed, Salt and Smith encourage budding authors to share their courses with TrainThis, and each time someone "buys the editables", £150 will wing that author's way.
The names of the courses provided on TrainThis.com tend to be rather catchy, with names such as 'Charts in Excel: data with the X-factor' and 'I'm a presenter, get me out of here!', the latter of which which helps presenters learn to deal with presentations technology.
TrainThis has proved a rapid hit since its launch in January of this year. Each course is downloaded an average of 70 times per week, according to The Fourth Level. And in the words of jubilant trainer Jan Holmes, from law firm Cadwalader, "I’m going to have to adopt you all as my children. TrainThis.com is brilliant!"
