Dr. Gillis was president of Rice University for more than a decade following a long, distinguished academic career.

Dr. Gillis was Rice University president from 1993 to 2004, and he remains a renowned leader in the field of nanotechnology, having been instrumental in the establishment of the Rice’s Richard E. Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology and the Rice Alliance. Prior to coming to Rice, Gillis was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Dean of the Graduate School for Duke University. He also has been a frequent Consultant to the World Bank, the U.S. Treasury Department, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Canadian Ministry of Finance and the Ford Foundation. Dr. Gillis is vice chair of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, and he serves on the board of directors for several public companies. From 1998 to 2004, he served on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and has served on the board on sustainable development for the National Academy of Sciences. He was on the advisory boards of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the International Center for Economic Growth and KPMG Peat Marwich Policy Economics Group. In addition, he served on the board of trustees for the Foundation for Hospital Art, the Francisco Marroquin Foundation, Friends of Education in Chile, the Institute of International Education and the Houston Advanced Research Center.

Dr. Gillis has received many honors in academia, including being recognized as a Distinguished Fulbright Professor at the Catholic University of Chile in 1989. He was awarded the NATA public service medal in 2004. A widely published economist, Dr. Gillis has authored or co-authored 10 books and dozens of articles for publications throughout the world.

A native of Marriana, Fla., Dr. Gillis earned his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Florida and his Ph. D. from the University Of Illinois. He holds an honorary Doctor of Laws from Rocky Mountain College.
