The Robert Trent Jones Junior Championship will be an annual event held in March that is open to all middle and high school aged junior golfers.
The Carolina Trace Country Club is home to two exceptional Robert Trent Jones, Sr. golf course designs. Jones was known as "The Open Doctor" for his prolific work in designing and upgrading courses to host major championships. He also designed or redesigned more than 500 golf courses in his 70+ years in the golf business. His work includes Augusta National (redesign), Spyglass Hill, Baltusrol, Olympic, Oak Hill, Southern Hills, Duke University Golf Club, Tanglewood Park- Champions Course, The Cardinal at Country Club of NC and Carolina Trace CC.
"Located just minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Pinehurst, NC the Home of American Golf, Carolina Trace is the perfect location to host a major junior championship that honors an individual that contributed so much to golf globally and in the US", said TGF director Bob Gerard. He went on to add, "Events such as the Robert Trent Jones Junior Championship not only provide high quality, highly competitive golf tournaments for young golfers, but they help to teach them about the history of the game and provides them with knowledge that allows them to appreciate what we have today.” Mr. Jones helped to shape an industry, he was a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, the first person to formally study golf course design and all of the necessary elements to prepare for a career in the field by creating his own curriculum while a college student at Cornell University and then spent seven decades in a chosen career that he loved. This is the story of an American Dream and it provides great inspiration and example to young men and women of what they can achieve if they pursue a passion through education and hard work.
Entries for The Robert Trent Jones Junior Championship are now open and regular entries close March 4, 2009 and can be made online at the Tarheel Golf Foundation website.
