French Innovation in Spotlight At Barcelona Mobile World Congress

 

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - London, United Kingdom, 02/06/2009 - UBIFRANCE, the French export-support agency, will hold a conference on the latest in wireless and contactless technology during the Mobile World Congress, which is being held in Barcelona from 16 to 19 February 2009.

   
 

The conference, which will showcase six French competitiveness clusters, will take place on 16 February at 2.30 pm in Hall 5, Level 3, Room 8. UBIFRANCE is also organising the French Pavilion, which will be located in Hall 2.

UBIFRANCE, for the third year running, is organising the French Pavilion, which will feature 75 companies, three competitiveness clusters, seven regional bodies and the Invest in France Agency. The Pavilion, which will be located in Hall 2, includes three adjoining stands with a total surface are of 550m2. It will have an area devoted to ongoing demonstrations focused on new technology. Anne-Marie Idrac, the French Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, will be the guest of honour at the French Cocktail, which will take place at the stand on 17 February 2009.

The six French competitiveness clusters participating in the conference on 16 February are Cap Digital, SCS, Elopsis, System[.]tic, Images et Reseaux and Minalogic. The conference will highlight the clusters’ research projects and outline the services and expertise they offer. It will also feature a panel of experts and will focus on forecasts, innovation and partnerships in the wireless and contactless sectors. PIMEC, a Spanish agency in charge of promoting international technology exchanges, and CTTC, the Catalonian Centre for Technology and Telecommunications, will also present Franco-Spanish partnerships in this sector.

Cap Digital
Cap Digital, which is based in the Paris region, focuses on digital content. It provides its members with business intelligence, training, partnerships, funding solutions, project reviews and networking services.

The cluster, which currently has 400 members (80% of which are innovative SMEs), has defined four priorities: R&D (174 innovative projects are already certified, with funding of more than €380 million); business development (including training and funding solutions); networking across the cluster's nine activity sectors; and, finally, international development (international projects and the organisation of international programmes to support SMEs in their export activities).

SCS – Secured Communicating Solutions
SCS (Secured Communicating Solutions) is based in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of south-eastern France. Its goal is to stimulate innovation through collaborative projects based on mobile technology.

The SCS cluster includes leading international companies such as 3M, Amadeus, Atmel, Atos Origin, Gemalto, HP, IBM, Orange, SAP, STMicroelectronics, ST – NXP Wireless, Texas Instruments and Thales Alenia Space. It also works with a wide range of start-ups, including Cityvox, Dmailer, Daclem, Digdash, Inside Contactless, Mobile Distillery, Prim Vision, SPS, Stid, Tagsys, 3 roam and Insight SIP.

At the World Mobile Congress, SCS will present M-Pub, a project developed by Prim Vision. M-Pub is an innovative mobile-phone advertising service, which enables customers to receive advertisements that match their profile.

Elopsys
Elopsys, which is based in the Limousin region of central France, is the competitiveness cluster for microwave technology, photonics, secure network technologies and digital design. Elopsys has 70 members as well as more than 150 partners. It has secured €70 million of financing, with 100 projects already approved. The cluster has helped to create 20 start-ups and is currently helping to set up a further three.

At the Mobile World Congress, Elopsys will present WOBnet, a project for the optimization of wireless communication systems in buildings. The main project stakeholders are Legrand, Cryptiris, XLIM, Cisteme, IUT of Limousin and Lycée Favard. The key technology involved is radio frequency transmission solutions for access and communication inside buildings.

System@tic
The System@tic competitiveness cluster brings together 300 companies in the Ile-de-France region working in the field of software-dominant systems and focusing on markets with a strong social dimension. The cluster focuses on five key sectors: automotive and transport; free and open-source software; security and defence; systems design and development tools; and, finally, telecoms. System@tic is now developing partnerships with other European and international clusters in similar markets.

During the World Mobile Congress, System@tic will present the URC project. The URC project aims to promote innovative dynamic spectrum assignment, dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio systems in dense urban environments. The objective is to define adapted spectrum management tools to ensure both optimization and security in the usage of the spectrum.

Images et Reseaux (Media & Networks)
The Images et Reseaux (Media & Networks) cluster focuses on the future of the internet and on new audiovisual content. It brings together over 160 members in the Bretagne and Pays de la Loire regions of France, including key industrial companies (Alcatel-Lucent, Canon, France Telecom-Orange, Mitsubishi, Thales and Thomson), content providers (Télévision de France and France 3) and academic institutions (CNRS, Telecom Bretagne, INRIA and Supelec), as well as more than 120 SMEs.

During the World Mobile Congress, the cluster will present the IM@G’in Lab project, which aims to establish a European reference platform for validation, integration and interoperability tests, as well as conducting research on services and innovative technologies for fixed and mobile networks. The IM@G’in Lab project will supply a broad range of services to industrial groups, SMEs (including Enensys) and research labs, and will also be open to partnerships with other French and European platforms.

Minalogic
The Minalogic competitiveness cluster, which is based in Grenoble (in south-eastern France), fosters research-led innovation in intelligent miniaturized products and solutions for use in industry. The role of Minalogic is to identify new value-added services that can be integrated into existing products in fields that include healthcare, the environment, mobility, the media, and textiles.

During the World Mobile Congress, Minalogic will present the FAST project. This is a project for switchable radio frequency filters using BAW technology for mobile telecommunications systems. The goal is to use BAW technology to develop and produce future generations of RF filters that respond to the specifications required for multi-mode mobile telephony applications, as well as to use innovative materials to develop more compact, energy-efficient RF components capable of performing both filtering and switching functions.
